Flaring up All over — Magnetic Activity in Rapidly-rotating Late-type M and L Dwarfs

چکیده

We present Very Large Array observations of twelve bona-fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood. The observed sources were chosen to cover a wide range of physical characteristics — spectral type, rotation, age, binarity, and X-ray and Hα activity — to determine the role of these properties in the production of radio activity, and hence magnetic fields. Three of the twelve sources, TVLM 513-46546, 2MASS J0036159+182110, and BRI 0021−0214, were observed to flare and also exhibit persistent emission, indicating that magnetic activity is not quenched across the sub-stellar boundary. The radio emission extends to spectral type L3.5, and contrary to Hα activity, there is no apparent decrease in the ratios of flaring and persistent luminosities to bolometric luminosities between M8−L3.5; Hα activity drops significantly beyond M7. Similarly, the radio emission violates the phenomenological relations between the radio and X-ray luminosities of coronal active stars, indicating that radio and X-ray activity are also uncorrelated at the bottom of the main sequence. The radio active sources that have measured rotational velocities are all rapid rotators, vsini ≈ 30 − 60 km sec−1, pointing to a correlation between rotation and radio/magnetic activity. However, this correlation is puzzling given that the observed radio emission requires sustained magnetic fields of ∼ 10 − 103 G and densities of ∼ 1012 cm−3, indicating that the active sources ought to have slowed down considerably due to magnetic braking. Flaring up All over — Radio Activity in Rapidly-rotating Late M and L Dwarfs

We present Very Large Array observations of twelve late M and L dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood. A First Look at Rotation in Inactive Late-type M Dwarfs

We have examined the relationship between rotation and activity in 14 late-type (M6-M7) M dwarfs, using high resolution spectra taken at the W.M. Keck Observatory and flux-calibrated spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Most were selected to be inactive at a spectral type where strong Hα emission is quite common. We used the cross-correlation technique to quantify the rotational broadenin...

0 Detection of H α Emission in a Methane ( T - type ) Brown Dwarf

We report the detection of Hα emission in the T dwarf (methane brown dwarf) 2MASSW J1237392+652615 over three days using the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. The measured line flux, log(LHα/Lbol) = −4.3, is roughly consistent with early M dwarf activity levels and inconsistent with decreasing activity trends in late M and L dwarfs. Similar emission is not seen in two other T dwarfs. We...

Spectral type dependent rotational braking and strong magnetic flux in three components of the late - M multiple system LHS 1070

We show individual high resolution spectra of components A, B, and C of the nearby late-M type multiple system LHS 1070. Component A is a mid-M star, B and C are known to have masses at the threshold to brown dwarfs. From our spectra we measure rotation velocities and the mean magnetic field for all three components individually. We find magnetic flux on the order of several kilo-Gauss in all c...

Chromospheric Activity, Rotation, and Rotational Braking in M and L Dwarfs

We present results from a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of 45 L dwarfs, which includes both very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Our spectra allow us to derive a significant number of new rotational velocities, and discover a slowly rotating (in projected velocity) L dwarf that allows more accurate measurement of spectroscopic rotations for these objects. We measure chromospheric activi...
